SONY IS BEING VERY CONSERVATIVE with their upcoming 3D releases. They have issued an official mandate to developers stating that 3D titles will be capped at a resolution of 720p, even if the title supports 1080i/1080p in non-3D mode.

It seems that Sony made the decision to make sure that 3D titles are able maintain 60 frames per second in 3D mode.

Update: Sources close to Sony are stating that the issue isn’t actually with the PlayStation 3 itself, but rather the HDMI 1.4 standard which limits resolutions to 720p 60fps, 720p 50fps, and 1080p 24fps.
