APPLE HAS REMOVED AN ARTICLE from it's support site Tuesday that urged Mac customers to use antivirus utilities.  They now state that the Mac is safe right "out of the box."

Apple spokesperson Bill Evans said that, "We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate".

The security message in its KnowledgeBase, which serves as a tutorial for Mac users, was that "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."  Anti-virus sofrware companies were pleased that Apple was urging Mac users to install antivirus software, however they have warned that running multiple antivirus products could cause problems and recommended against it.

The same Apple spokesperson later stated that, "However, since no system can be 100 percent immune from every threat, running antivirus software may offer additional protection." Currently there are no known viruses in the wild that exploit a vulnerability in the Mac OS.
