THE LATEST INCARNATION OF MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD will be incorporating code supplied by the French military. The French military which adopted the open source e-mail client in 2003, and currently has it deployed on over 80,000 computers.
The French military liked Mozilla's open source design which permitted France to build customized security extensions. The Gendarmerie Nationale police, which was part of the military at the time and did the design, released some of its work to the public under the name "TrustedBird," and co-branded it with Mozilla.
Thunderbird 3 which is being launched this week, employs some of the code from TrustedBird, as well as drawing on 1,000 other computer geeks and users around the world. |
